Say “no”, when you need to say “no”.

An unfortunate interaction this weekend served as a reminder of the importance of managing expectations through communication. On Sunday, I found myself in a situation where a business decided not to communicate to its customers that their expectations would not be met. I was one of their customers. It was frustrating, easily avoidable and I’m guessing, customers were lost – I will think twice before using them again. Meetings and events demand communication at every step of the planning process. I have learned to listen to my clients, over-communicate

Top 10 things to do in Missoula this Holly Jolly Season

I am always in search of good old fashioned Christmas cheer. Growing up in a small mountain Oregon town, I have always loved community traditions: bumping into each other while drinking something warm around a fire barrel on the corner of main street, comparing Christmas gifts with friends, sampling chocolate truffles and sniffing candles in a cozy storefront all with the backdrop of nostalgic Christmas décor and the lull of carols in the background.  Ever since moving to Missoula, Montana, my heart has been in search of the next

Whitefish, Montana: Your Small Meeting Paradise

I know it is my backyard and all, so it’s possible I’m biased - but there is no better place to host a small meeting than Whitefish, Montana.  To be fair, I am not the only one who thinks this, I do have backup - Recently, Maritz Travel (one of the country's leading corporate meeting planning groups) brought a group from LPL Financial to Whitefish for a 3-day conference. Their goal was to learn and connect through conference sessions coupled with authentic, outdoor Montana experiences. MNW Destinations partnered with

Part 2: Elevate your next Missoula event with local flavor

Earlier this summer I wrote a blog about Bozeman's foodie scene and how to apply it to your next Bozeman meeting.  We work in a diverse region covering Western Montana, from Yellowstone to Glacier National Parks.  Missoula is an excellent anchor point to host a meeting. Missoula, Montana has an incredible eclectic culture that provides unique experiences for evening events during a conference or meeting. Below are a few excellent suggestions for some distinctive Montana experiences! Photo: SakeTome, Missoula Taste of Missoula – Dine-Around Downtown I love

The Best Kept Secret – Yellowstone in the Fall

Yellowstone National Park is our country's oldest national park and one of the most popular. It has so much to offer, but do you know the best time to visit? Out of all the seasons, fall is the best time to make a trip to Yellowstone! Yellowstone is visited by an average of 4.1 million people every year with over half of those visiting between June and August. Once school starts and the summer vacation window is over, the number of visitors drastically decreases which means a much different

The Wright Family vs. The Smith River: a trip to remember

The massive limestone rock walls Montana’s Smith River carves through the landscape give you a real sense of the passage of time. This passage of time is written not only by how the sun travels more quickly over the narrow canyon walls than in most of Montana’s big sky, but also in how the very distinguished, often blazon, red layers pile upon each other. It is different than traveling to Rome, or even the east coast, where you feel insignificant in civilized history (especially coming from the west). It

Bringing Montana Flavors to your Evening Event – Part I: Bozeman

I recently attended a conference in Philadelphia where they had the welcome reception at the Reading Terminal Market. The Market was established in 1893 and has an incredible story of survival over the years through changes and expansion as the city of Philadelphia grew up around it. Inside, over 80 merchants offer everything from fresh baked doughnuts and cookies to authentic gyros or tabbouleh to four varieties of Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwiches, of course! For the welcome reception, conference attendees got to peruse the wonderous aisles and sample the signature

The Wright Family vs. The Smith River – Preparing for our First Montana Adventure of the Summer

I am not going to lie; I am nervous.  Earlier this year, my husband had this grand idea of floating the Smith River. This requires entering for a special permit and hoping you get drawn.  My husband arranged a huge group of people to put in for the Smith River permit and guess what, someone pulled it! We leave soon and it turns out I don’t know a soul going on this trip except my husband and our two kids…..and yes, we are the only ones going with kids.

Missoula 2.0

I call myself a native even though I wasn’t born in Missoula.  I moved there when I was 6 days old.  I think that still counts as native.  I have left a few times; once for college, once to travel, once to try the big city.  But I always found my way back (until a couple years ago when I permanently traded Missoula for the Flathead – just a couple hours north). If you were to ask me, Missoula has always been great.  Surrounded by mountains with a couple
